  1. Congratulations, soldier!  You have made it to week five,
  2. the end of the White phase of Basic Combat Training.
  3.  
  4. You've spent the last two weeks in basic rifle
  5. marksmanship training, learning how to maintain a tight
  6. grouping (employing the basic skill of marksmanship to
  7. ensure all rounds hit in a small target area - tight
  8. shoot group) in both simulation and live fire training.
  9. You've zeroed and certified your weapon, and now it's
  10. time to prove your skills on the firing range and earn
  11. your rifle qualification badge.
  12.  
  13. Successfully qualifying with the M16A2 rifle will make
  14. you the most feared combat system on the planet:  a
  15. U.S. Army Infantryman.  Qualifying 'Expert' will allow
  16. you the opportunity to attend Sniper School. Failure
  17. will give you the coveted opportunity to enjoy weeks
  18. three and four of Basic Combat Training one more time.

  20. Task:  Qualify with the M16A2 rifle.
  21.  
  22. Conditions:  Qualification occurs under combat conditions 
  23. with unlimited visibility.  Forty pop-up silhouette
  24. targets will be presented randomly at ranges from 50m to
  25. 300m, and you will have forty rounds of ammunition.  You
  26. will engage these targets from both a fighting position
  27. and from the prone position. You will be given the
  28. opportunity to practice in both of these positions before
  29. qualification begins.

  31. Standards:  In a combat condition, while being presented
  32. with 40 targets, engage and hit 36 targets to qualify
  33. for Expert Marksman, 30 for Sharpshooter, or a minimum
  34. of 23 to qualify as Marksman.
